2024.05.24[Press Release]

Shizen Energy Inc. and Google have signed a long-term virtual Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a utility-scale solar project in Japan.

Under this PPA, Google will receive the associated environmental attribute certificates generated by the new 20 megawatts (MW) AC project being developed by Shizen Energy and its partner Bison Energy Inc. on a former golf course located in the same power grid as Google’s data center in Inzai City, Chiba prefecture.

Construction of the new solar power plant to be built under the PPA is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed in 2027.

Shinji Okuyama, Vice President, Google Japan said “This agreement marks a major milestone in our regional clean energy strategy. Google is proud to enable this utility-scale solar project in Japan, which will support the operations of our data center in Inzai, aligning with Google’s ambition to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy across all the grids where we operate by 2030.”

Oliver Senter, Executive Officer of Shizen Energy responsible for Investment & Finance said “We are delighted to announce this PPA with Google which adds to our growing portfolio of corporate PPAs in Japan. In this project we worked closely with our partner Bison Energy, reflecting our strategy to act as a hub connecting customer decarbonization needs with a deep pool of projects, developed by both Shizen and its partners.”

In order to “Take Action For the Blue Planet”, Shizen Energy will continue to work towards corporate decarbonization by providing solutions such as the development of renewable energy power plants, the creation and sale of environmental value, and the long-term supply of renewable energy power through corporate PPAs.
