Shizen Energy Joins the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact, a UN-led International Initiative

2025.08.07[Press Release]

TOKYO, Japan – Shizen Energy Inc. (“Shizen Energy”) is pleased to announce that it has joined the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact, an international initiative led by the United Nations. Under its purpose, “We take action for the blue planet,” Shizen Energy is dedicated to achieving a 100% renewable energy world. This new commitment will further accelerate the company’s efforts to realize the supply of 24/7 carbon-free energy.

What is the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact?
The 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy movement is coordinated by Sustainable Energy for All, the United Nations, and a growing list of signatories from companies, organizations, and governments around the world. The Compact is an ambitious global effort to accelerate the decarbonization of the world’s electricity systems to mitigate climate change and ensure access to clean and affordable electricity for all, in line with SDG7.

The global initiative launched was launched in 2021 under the Energy Compacts umbrella. 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy means that every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumption is met with carbon-free electricity sources at every hour of every day, everywhere. Its objective is to match electricity demand with carbon-free energy supply on a real-time, hourly basis. This sets a more rigorous standard than traditional annual carbon-free energy procurement, ensuring all electricity consumption at all hours is met with carbon-free sources.

Governments, corporations, and organizations from around the world participate in the Compact, working to advance clean energy technology innovation and deployment, establish enabling policies and markets, and contribute to local communities.

Background for Joining
Since its founding in 2011, Shizen Energy has promoted renewable energy development projects that integrate environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The company provides comprehensive services across the entire project lifecycle—from development and construction to long-term operations and maintenance—creating value for both nature and local communities.

As technological innovation advances across various fields, we believe that achieving “24/7 CFE” is essential for the further adoption of renewable energy and the realization of our purpose. Shizen Energy has decided to join the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact in agreement with its core principles. We also aim to build a strong network with member companies and organizations and to develop systems and solutions that contribute to making 24/7 CFE a reality.

Shizen Energy Group’s Initiatives

Supplying Renewable Energy to Global Tech Companies via Off-site PPAs
With an integrated in-house system covering power plant development, financing, EPC, O&M, asset management, and environmental value trading, Shizen Energy Group promotes large-scale renewable energy projects in Japan. The company supports the decarbonization goals of global tech companies towards 24/7 CFE by signing Japan’s first virtual PPAs with partners such as Google and Microsoft, contributing significantly to the proliferation of corporate PPAs.

Building a VPP Platform through the Development of the “Shizen Connect” Energy Management System
We support the realization of resilient, decentralized energy systems by optimizing the operation of solar power plants, battery storage, EVs, and microgrids. Our group company, Shizen Connect Inc., which spearheads this development, has formed capital and business alliances with 12 companies, including major Japanese electric power companies. In the low-voltage VPP sector, its system has been adopted by retail electricity providers that represent 35% of the low-voltage (lighting) sales volume share in Japan (*1). Furthermore, in the industrial and grid-scale battery storage sector, the company has a proven track record across numerous projects, utilizing various functions such as remote control and monitoring, forecasting, supply-demand management, and market trading. The technology of the proprietary “Shizen Connect” energy management system—which integrates and controls diverse energy resources—contributes to the “Technology-Inclusive” principle of the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact, and we aim to create an environment where resources in Japan can participate in achieving 24/7 CFE.

Developing Hourly-Matching Technology through Demonstration Projects
Through a joint demonstration project with JERA, Shizen Connect, Inc. is developing technology to match renewable energy generation with electricity demand on an hourly basis (Time-matched procurement). The project aims to achieve hourly matching through system-level coordination that remotely controls battery storage.

Installation of Battery Storage Facilities
In addition to developing solar and wind power projects in Japan and abroad, we are promoting the installation of battery storage facilities for supply-demand balancing, contributing to the expansion of clean energy capacity.

Returning Power Sales Revenue to Local Communities
Based on the belief that true sustainability is built on collaboration with local communities, we return a portion of the revenue from our power generation projects to be used for solving region-specific challenges.

Shizen Energy will continue to focus on accelerating the energy transition by expanding clean energy, advancing technology, and fostering community-centered partnerships, thereby contributing to the realization of a 24/7 carbon-free energy supply.
